Using the Advice of a Mentor
Once you have found a great mentor, it is important to ask for his or her advice at important points in your career. When you are looking for a new job, be sure to engage your mentor in the process. Have him or her look over your resume, cover letter, portfolio, and any other materials that you will present during the application process. It is likely that your mentor has been involved in the hiring process in the past and will be able to give you great interviewing and application tips. Also, having another set of eyes to look over your application materials is a great asset. This will ensure that your presentation will be polished. This should also help your confidence.
Also, be sure to work with your mentor if you are considering moving up in your company, taking on new professional responsibilities, or going back to school to boost your skills. Your mentor may have already done many of these things or knows colleagues who have. Therefore, your mentor will be able to lend important advice during such periods of transitions. If you are thinking of going back to school for any reason, ask your mentor if there is a specific institution that he or she would recommend. If your mentor has professional contacts at a college or university that you would like to go to, then make sure that you get in touch with these individuals to learn more about the institution and programs. These contacts can be very helpful in terms of preparing your application. In addition to asking for advice during major transitions and changes in your career, it is also important ask for daily, practical advice. Every industry has a different code of office conduct and set of standards regarding professional relationships. Before starting a new job or going into a new office, be sure to have your mentor advise you about how to prepare, what to wear, and how to appropriately tend to professional relationships. Also, if you ever have a question about how to handle a specific professional situation, then be sure to speak with your mentor. During the course of your career, you will experience a number of different professional situations for which you need expert advice and the confidence of your mentor. If you ever have a question that, for one reason or another, your mentor can not answer for you, then be sure to ask him or her if she knows where you can find the answer. Perhaps he or she can recommend someone else with whom you can speak or can tell you how to research in order to find the answers that you need. A great mentor will never leave your questions unanswered.
