Making it in a Tough Market
Although the job market may be tough and the economy may be sluggish, there are a number of things that you can do to jump start your career. Making it through tough times takes energy, creativity, and innovation. But if you work hard and think outside of the box a bit, you will be just fine. The first and most important thing to do is to conduct the most thorough job search that you can.
First of all, do everything that you can to boost your credentials. If you need to take a few extra courses to distinguish your training, then do so. Make sure that you have as many internships and part time jobs under your belt as possible. Once that is done, begin an aggressive job search. Use every search engine that relates to your career field and apply for every job that matches your credentials. Also, make sure that you use every one of your contacts to help you find out about job openings. Furthermore, use your contacts to get great recommendations. There are, however, times when you may need a little additional help. If you have to engage the work of a recruiter, then do so. A job recruiter will have many contacts and will be able to help you guide your job search. Make sure that your recruiter knows exactly what you have to offer a company and what kind of company you want to work for. Go to interview after interview and do your best to find a great job. If that doesn't work, try getting your foot in the door by temping. One of the best ways to stand out in a crowd is to have a unique idea. Get a group of smart colleagues together and brainstorm. Think about what might help the sluggish economy. Think specifically about what might help your industry, see if you can't come up with something unique, something great. If you can get a great plan together - a plan that you can set into action - you can really make a change in your life as well as the lives of many other professionals in your industry. Can you, perhaps, start a non profit program? Can you begin a coalition of great thinkers in your industry? Can you develop a new way to organize important professional information? Also, be sure to consider relocating if that is a possible option for you. It is possible that there are job openings in other cities. Be sure to check job listings in other cities to see if there might be options for you elsewhere. If you have friends or colleagues living in other cities, be sure to ask them what they know about job options in your industry.
