One of the best ways that you can get you can build a great career is by building a great network. Being well-connected within your industry will open many doors and will help you to have the kind of fast-paced career that you will really enjoy. The more professional relationships you have the better chance you will have of getting great jobs and making important deals. In fact, employers may hire you simply because of your contacts of they are good enough. Here are some great ways to network:
- Stay in touch with alumna from your alma mater. Be sure to stay in touch with people that you went to school with, especially people who were in your field of study. If your school offers alum networking events, attend them. This will give you the chance to meet with people from your school who graduated during a different era. - Get an internship. Internships will teach you a great deal about your prospective career industry. An internship will also introduce you to many working professionals in the industry. Internships may actually lead to jobs. Therefore, check in with your career counseling office. Most career counseling offices have information on lots of internship options. - Attend career expos. Most cities host career expos at various times throughout the year. Before attending a career expo, be sure to make a list of the companies that you are most interested in speaking with. Make a point of speaking with representatives of these companies and get contact information from them. - Stay in touch with teachers. If you had a few professors that you really admired and got along with well, be sure to stay in touch with them after you receive your degree or certificate. Professors may be able to help you find work and will be able to provide sage advice about the industry. - Get a mentor. A professional mentor will be able to give you a great deal of important advice. Also, a mentor in your industry will help you to get great contacts and might even be able to help you land a job. A mentor can be someone that you have worked with, a teacher, or even a parent who works in your career field. By establishing a network, you will have a group of peers that you can rely on for professional advice and support. Furthermore, you will be able to use your connections to learn about new professional opportunities. Also, if you ever plan on going into business for yourself, or want to take part in a business venture, your contacts will help you a great deal. Never underestimate the importance of networking.
