Get in touch with someone who has worked there or currently works there and find out what it is like on the inside. Also, see if the companies offer information interviews. If so, be sure to schedule and attend one. After you have identified the top companies that you would like to work for, be sure to follow their job postings closely so that you know when there is an opening that you might be right for.

If, however, your dream companies do not have any openings that are right for you and you need to get working soon, then it is time to broaden your search. The first thing to do is to get a list a job search engines and resources that are applicable to your field. If you are in the arts, for example, there are a number of web boards that post job openings in the arts. There are similar web boards for jobs in politics, the non-profit sector, graphic arts, journalism, and a myriad of other industries.

After you have defined the search tools that you plan on using, be sure to scan the postings on a daily basis. Whenever you see a job posting that looks right to you, do a little research into the company that you plan on applying to. Learn everything that you can about the company: the work that they have done, current projects, and company culture, for examples. Once you have made sure that the company would be a great place to work and that their work relates directly to your skills, then send off the best application you can put together. Good luck!
