Prove Your Worth by Doing Some Research about Your Job

There are a couple of types of research you can do to prove what you're worth. First, and maybe most easily, you can use a Web resource like salary.com to see what people with the same job title as you are getting paid in various parts of the country.

Don't Discount Your Educational Background

Education doesn't always make a difference in how certain positions are compensated, but it can. In some cases, people's salaries skyrocket overnight when they earn a Bachelor's degree. If you are considering furthering your education in order to have more earning power, make sure the degree or courses you're considering will actually help you in your quest to get paid more.

These two methods will give you a baseline indication of what your worth is or should be. However, you might do more in your job than your title indicates. If this is the case, you should make a list of what you do in excess of your job description. Figure out whose job you're actually doing in conjunction with your own, and then figure out how much that person gets paid as well. You should calculate your worth according to how much of another person's job you're actually carrying out in addition to your own. If you're doing part of your boss's job or part of a co-worker's in your department, you should make a note of that. Though it probably would not go over too well to demand twenty-five percent of your boss's salary even if your doing a quarter of his or her job, pointing this out in a business-like fashion at review time can help you get a better raise than what someone in your position might be entitled do without doing those additional responsibilities. Furthermore, if you are looking for employment outside of your current job situation, the knowledge that you've gained from doing research into what someone like your boss might make, in the example we're using, will help you decide what type of offer will be commensurate with what your actual worth is.

The Other Way to Prove Your Worth

Let there never be a question that you're worth what you're paid. If you are happy in your current job, you should make sure that you are turning in consistently good performances so that your salary never seems unjustified to those who are paying it to you. Even more importantly, if you're not happy in your current situation, this might be the most critical time to make sure you're firing on all cylinders around the office, so that when prospective employers call for a reference, no one will be able to say you're not worth what you're asking for.
