Getting Your First Job
It is almost certain that your first job will be an entry-level job. This is not, however, a bad thing. While entry-level positions do not offer the best salaries or compensation packages, they often allow employees to take on a number of different responsibilities which will poise them for more senior and better paying positions. Also, if you get an entry-level position within a company that you really love, you can simply stay there and work toward promotions.
When you begin your job search, look specifically for entry level jobs in your profession that offer advancement opportunities. This means that a company is looking to hire people who will stay with the company for years to come and who will also grow with the company and advance therein. Also, be sure to research every company to which you send a job application. It is important to know everything that you can about a company for two reasons. The first reason is that you will be properly educated for your interview. This will likely make a good impression on your interviewer. The second reason is that you need to know if the company is really right for you. Make sure that the company does work that you are capable of handling. Also, make sure that your work at the company will interest you. If, however, you can not find an entry-level job that seems to be perfectly suited to you, do not worry. The experience that you will gain within an entry-level job will allow you to apply for jobs at other companies later on. As long as the job is within your field, the experience that you gain there will be valuable. Some people take entry-level jobs even after they have already held another entry-level position. This is a good option to consider if you are trying to get into a new line of work. If, for example, your degree is in English and you start your career at a publishing house, but then decide to go into marketing, you may want to take an entry-level marketing position in order to get started on your new career. Alternatively, a person with a few years of experience may take on an entry-level position at another company that is very well respected. In fact, some very prestigious companies require that even their entry-level employees have a good deal of experience. Therefore, you may want to consider getting the job of your dreams through a succession of entry level jobs in your field. If the company that you have always wanted to work for is hiring entry-level employees and you already have two years of experience, be sure to send your resume. After all, you will be more qualified than most other applicants and might have the opportunity for fast advancement.
