Explore Career Paths
If you feel a little lost about what career you want to step into, don't worry. Many people have a hard time deciding on a path. The best way to assess your career options is to do some research and try to expose yourself to the environment of the different careers.
Research Always take the time to research your career options. You can't just jump into a career without knowing if you'll enjoy the work. Starting a career or changing your career takes time and education. Before you invest in your next move, search the Internet, read books and talk to people in the profession. There are many web sites out there that will describe different careers. You'll be able to find in-depth information on the path to that career and what you will expect working in that field. You can also find blogs where people in that career choice speak about the everyday ins and outs of the job. Head to your local library for more information. The library has a career section with rows of books. You can find books on specific careers or books that describe careers in certain job categories such as career opportunities in healthcare, entertainment, or the arts. Another great way to research career options is by talking to people who work in that particular field. If you have a friend of relative that works in a career you're interested in, take them out for dinner or set aside a couple of hours so that you can grill them with all of your questions. Internships To get first hand knowledge of a career, try applying for internships. Internships are usually given to students in college for academic credit. There are also paid internships out there. Check with your school or a particular company to see what internships they offer. Internships allow you to get a feel of the environment and type of work that is involved with a particular career. This is the best way to assess a career option. You will be surrounded by people in different stages of the career ladder. Take some time to absorb the environment and then talk to a couple of people about what they think of the work. Jobs Another way to assess a career is by getting a job within that field. This could be working as a file clerk or receptionist. It's not exactly the job you want in the field but it will expose you to the environment of the career. You will also meet people that can answer any questions you have about the career. You don't have to stay at the job forever, just until you get an idea if it is the direction you want to be headed. Once you choose your career option, plan your attack. Research what schooling you will need and any other training you may need to get you where you want to go.
