Demonstrate Why You Deserve A Better Package
How can you demonstrate why you deserve a better package? Well, the first way might be pretty obvious, but that doesn't mean you should ignore it: to prove to those who can give you a better package that you deserve one, let your performance around the office be flawless. Who deserves a better package? Many people feel like they do. But who do employers feel are worthy of better packages? Unsurprisingly, it is those employees who continuously demonstrate a commitment to excellence, who aren't afraid of pitching in and picking up the slack, who go above and beyond, and who add value to the organization.
Keep a Record of the Ways in Which You Are the Model Employee for the Better Package If you are frequently on the receiving end of "atta-boy" or "atta-girl" e-mails, print them out and keep them in a safe place. In addition to providing a pick-me-up for when you might be feeling blue, these e-mails will be important evidence when you make a case for yourself for getting a better package. The same "keep a folder" principle applies to situations where you show your tireless devotion to pitching in on a team project and/or picking up the slack around the office. Even if no one e-mails you to commend them, you should commemorate these occasions for yourself. Do it sooner rather than later. If you're really the type of person who is busy all the time with your own great work or helping others make their work great, you might not feel as if you have the time to be keeping an accomplishments journal, but you owe it to yourself to do just that. Do the same when you know you've exceeded the expectations of those around you in your own work. In addition, if you've taken courses that enhance your ability to do your job, hang on to the certificates you get from them and put those in your folder as well. It might be a class in slideshow presentations, or it might be a course in public speaking. If you do anything outside of work from which your job will derive a direct benefit, it should go into the records you're keeping for yourself that relate to demonstrating you deserve a better package. Tastefully Present All the Information You've Compiled When It's Time When it's time to discuss the better package that you're after, go to your folder and find a way to succinctly and effectively present the information. Ideally, you should have a one-sheet document for yourself that will give the people in charge of your compensation an impressive glance at what an impressive person you are.
