The Aspects of a Great Mentor
When choosing a mentor, it is important to find someone who has all of the aspects of a great mentor. A mentor is someone who can provide you with wonderful professional advice as well as personal advice when you need it. A mentor is also someone who has a good deal of experience and can give you expert information. Furthermore, a mentor is also someone who is willing to spend time with you discussing your career and life choices. The guide below should help you to identify the perfect mentor.
Is this a person who I trust? The most important thing about having a mentor is having someone whom you trust. Because you may find yourself explaining professional situations that are directly impacted by aspects of your personal life, it is important that you be able to trust your mentor with personal information. Your mentor must be someone who you are comfortable approaching and asking for help. Is this a person with a great deal of professional knowledge and experience? Your mentor must be someone who knows a great deal about your industry if he or she is going to be able to provide you with the great advice, assistance, and guidance that you need. It is best if your mentor has worked or has some experience in different aspects of your career field. Is this a person who is willing to help me? Although you may greatly respect a teacher or supervisor, he or she might not have time to give you the attention and assistance that you need. Generally, a mentor should be someone with whom you already have a great relationship. If this is the case, then it is likely that he or she will make time to work with you and help you launch your career. Is this a person with good professional connections? One of the best things about having a mentor is having someone who knows a great deal about your industry and has professional relationships with many other people in the industry. Such connections will help you to get interviews at companies of your choice (and, hopefully, land a great job!). Also, mentors should be able to help you get informational interviews. Informational interviews will help you to learn about the internal workings of specific companies within your industry. These are very helpful as they will give you an inside view of the industry and help you to make important professional choices. Is this a person who will be easy to stay in touch with? If your mentor lives in India and you are planning on beginning your career in California, for example, you may have a hard time staying in touch. While email can be helpful, phone calls and face-to-face meetings are the best ways to stay in touch.
